WHA Update, March 1984

The World History Association sponsored several activities during the AHA annual meeting in December. Panels on conceptualizing premodern world his­tory and teaching world history were well attended. Future activities pro­posed at the general business meeting included conferences, studies on world history courses in the college curricu­lum, encouragement of world history in the secondary schools, publications, liai­son with other organizations, and future AHA panels. The first issue of the World History Bulletin, our semiannual newsletter, was distributed, along with copies of a world history syllabus collection edited by and available from Ross Dunn (San Diego State University). The Chair Pro Tem, Kevin Reilly, also announced membership approval of the constitution prepared by the steering committee and the election results for 1984. Elected officers are: President Ross Dunn (San Diego State), Vice President Kevin Reilly (Somerset County College), Sec­retary Craig Lockard (Wisconsin-Green Bay), and Treasurer Ernest Menze (Iona), all two-year terms. The execu­tive committee includes: William McNeill (Chicago), Howard Mehlinger (Indiana), and Lynda Shaffer (Tufts), three-year terms; Marilyn Hitchens (Wheat Ridge High School), Ray Lorantes (Drexel), and Arnold Schrier (Cin­cinnati), two-year terms; Sarah Hughes (Hampton Institute), Mary Rossabi (Fieldston School), and Martin Yanuck (Spelman), one-year terms. A nominat­ing committee, chaired by Lynda Shaffer, was appointed. Historians in­terested in joining the organization can send their dues ($10 per year) to the treasurer, Ernest Menze, History Department, Iona College, New Rochelle, NY 10810.
