“I believe that universities and public schools have a common goal and should work together as much as possible. . . .”
“It has been a long time since I participated this much [in a teacher institute] in terms of interaction and discussion. . . .”
“I appreciate most the manner by which you treated us as professionals. . . .”
These comments are taken from the evaluations submitted by participants in the History Teaching Alliance summer seminars. Both university and secondary school teachers who came together to form five teaching collaboratives in 1985, enthusiastically endorse the project and look forward to continuing their discussions throughout the school year.
Already they have begun to plan for the continuation of their collaborative programs in 1986-87, when they will be joined by university and secondary school colleagues organizing new colla boratives throughout the country as part of the History Teaching Alliance.
A joint project of the Organization of American Historians, the National Council for the Social Studies, and AHA, the Alliance sponsors the organization of history teaching collaboratives in local communities. These year-long seminars bring university and secondary school teachers together to create an ongoing professional association of historians who share a dedication to the field and to teaching. The Alliance is governed by a distinguished Oversight Committee whose members include:
