The History Teaching Alliance announces the upcoming relocation of its national office to a new home in the Department of History at the University of Florida in Gainesville. The move is being undertaken at the invitation of the Florida History Department, which has offered to institutionalize the Alliance program in Gainesville beginning July 1, 1987.
The Alliance Oversight Committee, composed of representatives appointed by the AHA, NCSS, and OAH unanimously voted to accept the University’s invitation in November 1986. The President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities, an active supporter of the Alliance program, has also endorsed the planned relocation. Finally, the executive boards of the three sponsoring professional associations—AHA, NCSS, and OAH—have voted to accept the University’s offer of support.
The University’s recognition of the Alliance program and its willingness to provide a long-term base of operations mark an important step in Alliance development of a very successful national project into a permanent program for history education. The Alliance looks forward to the opportunity the University of Florida has provided to expand and institutionalize Alliance projects already in operation nation wide.
The Alliance will continue to be governed by the Oversight Committee and welcomes a new member of the Committee to be appointed by the American Association of State and Local History. One of the Committee’s most important responsibilities is to review all applications sent to the Alliance from university and secondary school teachers interested in organizing collaboratives in their communities. New projects already accepted and preparing to begin this summer include collaborative seminars dealing with Hispanic, Third World, American Indian, and state and local history. We look forward to new proposals in the months ahead.
