American Historical Review

Starting with the October 2007 issue, members will notice something new about the American Historical Review: “The University of Chicago Press” and its logo will appear on the cover of the journal. The editorial offices will continue to be housed at Indiana University in Bloomington, and maintain the same high standards of peer review that have distinguished the Review for the past 112 years. Collaborating with the University of Chicago Press will allow the AHA to provide members with better access to the journal—along with new online features—and also help the Review reach a larger audience.

The University of Chicago Press is the largest American university press, and its Journals Division has a long tradition of publishing distinguished history journals, including the Journal of Modern History and Isis, the official publication of the History of Science Society. The Journals Division has also been a pioneer in electronic publishing, delivering original, peer-reviewed research from international scholars to a worldwide audience since 1995. Their expertise will assist the AHA in providing members with new and enriched ways of accessing and using the content in the Review, while also improving the marketing and fulfillment of subscriptions.

“In selecting a Press to represent the American Historical Review we sought an institution with an impeccable scholarly reputation and a deep commitment to scholarly journals. The University of Chicago Press is outstanding on both counts. Indeed, in this age of increasing commercialization even in academic publishing, Chicago’s list of books and journals continues to impress the community of scholars with the seriousness of its titles,” wrote Robert A. Schneider, editor of the American Historical Review (see “Recent Changes at the AHR”). “The editors and staff of the AHR are looking forward to a long and fruitful relationship with the University of Chicago Press, a relationship that will be a credit to both institutions.”

“We are very pleased and honored to be selected to publish the American Historical Review. The partnership between the AHA and Chicago Journals reflects a shared dedication to providing lasting scholarship that is accessible and discoverable, both today and for generations to come,” said Nawin Gupta, Journals Division Manager, University of Chicago Press.

Access to future issues will change substantially. Starting with the October 2007 issue, theReview will appear on the Press’s web site, providing seamless 24-hour access to the latest issues. The Press also intends to provide electronic access to the full run of the AHR to all members for the duration of their memberships through Chicago Journals Online, at www.journals.uchicago.edu. When the issue goes online in October, members will receive additional information about how to gain access.

To assure a smooth transition, we will also continue to post new issues online at the History Cooperative through the end of the year. And given the large number of smaller history journals published through the end of the year, the AHA will also continue to subsidize the Cooperative for the next two years, to assure they can work out a sustainable business model.
