Notes from the American Jewish Historical Society
Our museum at our national headquarters on the Brandeis University campus in Waltham, Massachusetts, has hosted many visitors in the past few months to its exhibits. They include The German Jew in America: Businessman, Organizer, Reformer, assembled from the Society’s collections by Dr. Nathan M. Kaganoff, Librarian; Gan Hadorot, Garden of the Generations, a timeline history of the family of a trustee; Five Hundred Years of Jewish Life in Germany (Leo Baeck Institute); and Jews in Colonial America (permanent exhibit). Future exhibits include The Jewish Experience in American Film.
In addition to the scholarly programs dealing with Jewish immigration at the National Conference in Baltimore, Maryland, June 8-10, conferees will be able to enjoy the restored Lloyd Street synagogue, part of a new Jewish Heritage Center.
The fourth volume in the series Guide to America/Holy Land Studies, 1620-1948 has been published; vol. 1 American Presence, vol. 2 Political Relations and American Zionism, vol. 3 Economic Relations and Philanthropy, vol. 4 Resource Material in British, Israeli and Turkish Repositories. Soon to be published will be papers from the Second Scholarly Colloquium on America/Holy Land Studies, held at the National Archives in 1983.
The Society is actively seeking acquisitions pertinent to American Jewish history, i.e. personal memorabilia, organizational or synagogue records, photographs, etc.
Dual awards were made to the 1984 winners of the Leo Wasserman Prize for the outstanding Student Research Essay by a college undergraduate or graduate student. The winners were both seniors at the time of their submissions; they are Adam Wolfson (Harvard University) and Stefanie Siegmund (Amherst College).
To celebrate its 100th anniversary in 1992, the Society has planned a multi-volume history about Jewish life in America.
