North American Society for Oceanic History

Winners of the John Lyman Book Awards were announced at the annual meeting of the North American Society for Oceanic History. The awards, named for the late professor John Lyman of the University of North Carolina, recognize excellence in the publication of books that make significant contributions to the study and understanding of maritime and naval history.

Nicholas Tracy won the award in the category Canadian naval and maritime history for A Two-Edged Sword: The Navy as an Instrument of Canadian Foreign Policy (McGill–Queen's Univ. Press).

Barry Gough received an honorable mention in the category Canadian naval and maritime history for Juan de Fuca's Strait: Voyages in the Waterway of Forgotten Dreams (Harbour Publishing).

David Rigby won the award in the category US naval history for Allied Master Strategists: The Combined Chiefs of Staff in World War II (Naval Institute Press).

Robert Shenk received an honorable mention in the category US naval history for America's Black Sea Fleet: The US Navy Amidst War and Revolution, 1919–1923 (Naval Institute Press).

W. Jeffrey Bolster won the award in the category US maritime history for The Mortal Sea: Fishing the Atlantic in the Age of Sail (Belknap Press of Harvard Univ. Press).

James P. Delgado received an honorable mention in the category US maritime history for Misadventures of a Civil War Submarine: Iron, Guns and Pearls (Texas A&M Univ. Press).

Lissa K. Wadewitz won the award in the category naval and maritime science and technology for The Nature of Borders: Salmon, Boundaries, and Bandits on the Salish Sea (Univ. of Washington Press).

Larry Berman received an honorable mention in the category naval and maritime biography and autobiography for Zumwalt: The Life and Times of Admiral Elmo Russell "Bud" Zumwalt, Jr. (HarperCollins Publishers).

Jonathan Kinghorn won the award in the category naval and maritime reference works and published primary sources for The Atlantic Transport Line, 1881–1931 (McFarland and Company).

John D. Broadwater received an honorable mention in the category naval and maritime reference works and published primary sources for USS Monitor: A Historic Ship Completes its Final Voyage (Texas A&M Univ. Press).

The Renaissance Society of America

The Renaissance Society of America announced the following awards on April 6, 2013, at its annual meeting in San Diego.

The William Nelson Prize for the best article published in Renaissance Quarterly in 2012 was awarded to Ewa Kocieszewska (Warburg Inst.), for the article "War and Seduction in Cybele's Garden: Contextualizing the Ballet des Polonais," Renaissance Quarterly 65. no. 3 (2012): 809–63.

The Phyllis Goodhart Gordan Book Prize for the best book published in Renaissance studies was awarded to Anthony Cascardi (Univ. of California, Berkeley), for his book Cervantes, Literature, and the Discourse of Politics (Univ. of Toronto Press).

The Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation Book Prize for the best book in Renaissance Venetian studies was awarded to E. Natalie Rothman (Univ. of Toronto), for her book Brokering Empire: Trans-Imperial Subjects between Venice and Istanbul (Cornell Univ. Press).

The Paul Oskar Kristeller Lifetime Achievement Award was awarded to Ronald G. Witt (Duke Univ.).
