Permission to Use AHA Copyrighted Material

All material published by the American Historical Association in any medium is protected by copyright. See footnote about the Association’s Annual Report.

Users may link to the AHA web site freely and may quote from AHA publications as allowed by the doctrine of fair use.

Perspectives articles published since February 2014 are licensed under Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International License. Requests for reprints of derivatives, commercial republication, or articles published prior to February 2014 should be directed to perspectives@historians.org with Permissions Request in the subject line.

General Rules

    • The Association grants gratis permission for classroom, library, or other educational usage when no fee is charged or when distribution is at cost-of-duplication. When the resulting publication is sold for profit, a fee is assessed by AHA staff.
    • Consent of the author in writing is required for reprints of AHA material when the resulting publication is being sold for profit. The AHA can assist in locating mail and email addresses.
    • Full bibliographical citation to the article or pamphlet must be included in a footnote or in an acknowledgments section.
    • All permissions are for one print reprinting only, with separate permission required for each subsequent usage.

      • University and Course name
      • Name and address of individual making the request

For reprints

      • Author and title of article or pamphlet
      • Page numbers or URL
      • Author and title of publication in which the material will be reprinted

      • Price per unit and print run, or note if gratis distribution
      • Expected date of publication
      • Name and address of individual making the request

Annual Report

The Annual Report of the American Historical Association was published for 100 years by the Smithsonian Institution, from its inception in 1894 until 1994. As a federal publication, the Reports are in the public domain and users do not need to contact the Association for permission to reprint.

Annual Reports from 1997 forward are available online.

In all cases, full bibliographical citation to the Annual Report must be included in a footnote or in an acknowledgments section.
