Letters to the Editor

Dear Editor:

Two matters raised in the January 1988 issue of Perspectives especially intrigued me. The first was Professor Chafe’s recognition of the necessity to better incorporate more representation from among small liberal arts and community college faculties in the leadership of the AHA, as well as program participation. Now that a chair of a Nominating Committee has recognized this problem, it might be acted upon by the current and new officers.

Secondly, I was pleased to note the “Viewpoint” expressed by Professor Theodore H. Von Laue (“Responsibility Over Mindset”). Perhaps, we can recognize that relevance is at least equally important as irrelevance. Otherwise, we may find history will continue to decline at the very moment there is a renewed interest in teaching among high school graduates and when the times cry for meaningful historical perspective.
