In graduate school, I read Perspectives solely for the job listings and wanted nothing more to do with it after I obtained a permanent position. Lynn Hunt’s columns this year, however, kept me reading. She spoke to the disaffection of the younger generation without pandering to our disgruntlement. On issues like hiring, publishing, and tenure, she leavened critique with wisdom and reconciled idealism with experience. I hope that her successor, Professor McPherson, will take up the tradition, and I hope just as fervently that Professor Hunt-and others like her-will continue to write incisively on these subjects.
