Reynolds Co.The 128th annual meeting of the Association will be held January 2-5, 2014, in Washington, DC, at the Marriott Wardman Park, the Omni Shoreham, and the Washington Hilton. The AHA has previously met in the Association’s headquarters city 30 times. Members can look forward to receiving the Program of the annual meeting in mid-November.

This year's meeting promises a rich program of offerings. The Program Committee and AHA divisions and committees have organized 259 sessions and affiliated societies have planned more than 100 additional sessions. In addition, a new schedule for the major activities will allow members to enjoy and participate in the meeting's key events. Kenneth Pomeranz (Univ. of Chicago) will deliver the presidential address the evening of Friday, January 3. The AHA's book prizes, the Awards for Scholarly Distinction, and other honors will be announced on the meeting's opening night, Thursday, January 2, just prior to the plenary session. Annual meeting sessions and events are scheduled in the Marriott, Omni, and Hilton hotels.

Accommodations

The Marriott Wardman Park has a block of 1,100 rooms and will serve as headquarters, housing the AHA Exhibit Hall, the Job Center, and the AHA and affiliate events and sessions. The Omni Shoreham, with a block of 800 rooms, and the Washington Hilton, with an additional 800 rooms, will also house AHA and affiliate sessions and events. A shuttle will operate between the Marriott/Omni and the Hilton.

For rates, please see the chart. Please note that all rooms are subject to 14.5% sales tax per room, per night (subject to change without notice). As a special benefit to allow members to take advantage of Washington venue, the discounted meeting rates are in effect three days before and after the January 2-5 meeting dates, on a limited number of rooms only at each property.

Making a Hotel Reservation

Once preregistered for the annual meeting, attendees can make hotel reservations at the AHA rates. Registered attendees will receive confirmation of their registration that will include information on how to make a standard room or suite reservation with the annual meeting rates.Ground TransportationFrom Airports:The nation's capital is served by two international airports, Dulles International Airport (IAD), approximately 30 miles west of Washington, and Thurgood Marshall Baltimore-Washington International Airport (BWI), approximately 38 miles north of Washington. The region is also served by a smaller, close-in airport, Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA), located in Arlington, Virginia. All airports offer excellent ground transportation with service available from the airports to the hotels.Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) is served by taxi, van, and public transit.

The taxi ride from the airport to the hotels takes about 25-35 minutes, depending on time of day and traffic, with approximate cost of $20 not including tip, plus $2.50 airport fee.SuperShuttle provides door-to-door van service to and from the airport to hotels. The fare is $14 each way.Metrorail, the region's rapid transit system, has an elevated station (Reagan National on the Blue and Yellow lines) connected to the concourse level of terminals B and C. The Marriott and Omni hotels are within a block of the Woodley Park-Zoo/Adams Morgan Station on the Red Line ($3.15 peak fare, $2.05 off peak; 30 minutes travel time); the Washington Hilton is four blocks from the Dupont Circle Station on the Red Line ($2.80 peak fare, $2.05 off peak; 25 minutes travel time). You need a SmarTrip card or reusable paper farecard to ride Metrorail (each paper farecard costs an additional $1).

Dulles Airport (IAD) is served by taxi, motorcoach, rail, and van. Washington Flyer is the exclusive vendor for ground transportation at IAD.

Washington Flyer taxicabs serve Dulles International Airport exclusively with 24-hour service from the airport, and an approximate fare of $56 to the hotels. Travel time is roughly 45 minutes.SuperShuttle provides door-to-door service to and from the airport to hotels. The fare is $29 each way.There is no direct motorcoach service from Dulles to downtown Washington, but attendees can take Washington Flyer coach service to Metrorail's West Falls Church station on the Orange Line. From this point, travelers can continue by Metrorail or by taxicab. The coach fare is $10 one way and $18 round-trip.Metrobus service is also available to downtown Washington or to Metrorail via the Rosslyn (Blue and Orange Lines) and Metro Center (Red Line) stops.

BWI Airport (BWI) is served by taxi, van, and rail.

Taxi service is available from the airport to meeting hotels. The approximate fare is $90, with a 45-minute cab ride.SuperShuttle offers door-to-door van service from the airport to hotels. The fare to the hotels is $37 each way.Metrorail offers express bus service between BWI and the Greenbelt Metrorail station on the Green Line. The service costs $6 one way.An Amtrak train station also serves BWI with more than 40 Amtrak and Maryland commuter (MARC) trains to Washington's Union Station. The airport provides shuttle service from its terminals to the BWI Rail Station. Amtrak coach-class service is $15 to $38 one way, depending service class. MARC is $7 one way, with a travel time of 25 minutes. Upon arriving at Union Station, attendees can take a cab or Metrorail (Red Line) to their hotel.

From Amtrak:

Washington's Union Station is located at Massachusetts Avenue and First Street NE. Amtrak's ticket office at Union Station is open daily from 5:30 a.m.-10:30 p.m. A cab ride from Union Station to the hotels takes from 15-20 minutes and costs from $10-$14. Union Station also has its own Metrorail subway stop on the Red Line. The trip to the hotels takes about 10 minutes and costs $2.25 peak fare and $1.80 off peak.

Group meetings and reunions: Societies and groups that have not already made arrangements to hold sessions or other meetings should send their requests for room space as soon as possible to , director, meetings and administrative operations (fax 202- 544-8307). Please specify preferred date, inclusive hours, attendance forecast, and any special equipment desired.Business meeting: Resolutions for the business meeting signed by 50 members of the Association will be accepted until November 1 and must be no more than 300 words in length. Resolutions should be sent to the executive director at the AHA office, with a copy to the parliamentarian, Michael Les Benedict, 106 Dulles Hall, Ohio State University, 230 W. 17th Avenue, Columbus, OH 43210.

AHA Registration

For information about rates for both preregistration and onsite registration, see the box at left.Preregistration: Attendees are urged to pre-register at reduced rates. Advance preregistration must be received by December 20, 2013. Please note that preregistration for the 2014 meeting will be handled by a processing service and forms should be sent to the address shown on the form and not the AHA.

Registration at the meeting: The registration desks at the annual meeting, located in Washington Room 1 of the Marriott Wardman Park (see the table below for hours).The special group rates for teachers will not be available on site.

Admission to all AHA sessions, exhibits, Job Center, and the Internet Center requires a 2014 meeting registration badge.

Refund policy: Advance registrants who are unable to attend the meeting may request a refund of their registration fee. Cancellations and refund requests must be submitted in writing and postmarked (or e-mailed) by December 20, 2013. Refunds will be processed less a $20 administration fee. No refunds will be issued for requests postmarked or e-mailed after December 20, 2013. Refunds will not be given for no-shows. Cancellations and refund requests should be submitted to American Historical Association, Business Office, 400 A St. SE, Washington, DC 20003 or e-mailed to Phu Pham. Faxed refund requests will not be accepted. Proof of payment-copies of front and back of canceled check or copy of credit card statement-may be required.
