Michael Grossberg arrived in Bloomington, Indiana, in mid-August to take over the editorship of the American Historical Review and to begin his tenure as a professor in the history department at Indiana University. Grossberg left a position as professor of history and law at Case Western Reserve University, where he also served as department chair and editor of the Law and History Review. Grossberg earned his B.A. from the University of California at Santa Barbara, and his Ph.D. from Brandeis University. He is the author of Governing the Hearth: Law and the Family in Nineteenth-Century America (1985), which won the Ohio Academy of History Publication Prize, as well as a forthcoming study from Cambridge, A Judgment for Solomon: The d’Hauteville Case and Legal Experience in Antebellum America.
The current editor of the AHR, David L. Ransel, will finish his tenure with the publication of the October issue of the Review. The October issue is the second of two 100th anniversary numbers of the journal. Ransel will continue as professor of history at Indiana and will also serve as director of the university’s Russian and East European Institute.
