The Association regrets to report the death of Julian K. Roosevelt, the chair of its Board of Trustees, on March 27, 1986, at his home in Oyster Bay, Long Island. He was sixty-one. Member of a distinguished American family and great-nephew of President Theodore Roosevelt (who was president of the AHA in 1912), “Doo ley” Roosevelt, as he was known to his legions of friends, led a successful career in investment banking and was vice-president of Sterling Grace and Company at the time of his death.
Even better known as a world class amateur sportsman, Mr. Roosevelt served as a member of the US Olympic yachting team in 1948 and again, two years after he was graduated from Harvard, in 1952, when his team won the gold medal in the Helsinki games. He further served as manager of the team at the 1956, 1960, and 1964 Olympic games. Mr. Roosevelt’s dedication to the highest traditions of sportsmanship led to his selection as a member of the nine member executive branch of the International Olympic Committee.
His deep interest in history led him to undertake the duty of chair of our Board of Trustees in 1975, just after the present constitution of the AHA was put into effect. He was reelected twice to further terms in this responsible position. The Association will miss his careful and faithful guidance of our fiscal interests and sends its sympathy to his family.
