Historian Carl N. Degler, president of the AHA in 1986 and Margaret Byrne Professor of American History, Emeritus, at Stanford University, passed away on December 27 at the age of 93.

Degler taught at Stanford from 1968 until his retirement in 1990. He received a Pulitzer Prize in 1972 for his landmark book on race relations, Neither Black nor White, and was one of only two male founding members of the National Organization for Women. In addition to his service at the AHA, Degler was elected president of the Organization of American Historians and the Southern Historical Association. Degler’s AHA presidential address, “In Pursuit of an American History,” was delivered in Chicago, Illinois, on December 28, 1986.
