The 1988 annual meeting of the Association will be held in Cincinnati, December 27–30. The Program Committee welcomes proposals by historians (academic and nonacademic), by scholars in related disciplines, and by affiliated societies. The committee, approved by the Council, consists of the following: Konrad Jarausch, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, (chair); Melvyn P. Leffier, University of Virginia (co-chair); Joyce Appleby, University of California, Los Angeles; Peter Czap, Amherst College; Gregory Figgs, Scott Center High School; Michael Frisch, SUNY Buffalo; Carol Gluck, Columbia University; Lynn Hunt, University of California, Berkeley; Charles G. Nauert, Jr., University of Missouri, Columbia; and David Thelen, Indiana University.
In order to assess the decline or renewal of the historical enterprise, the committee will favor proposals dealing with the theme “History as Inquiry and Practice.” Such sessions might discuss the status of the discipline in the public discourse, its relationship to other methodologies, or the conflict between the old and new approaches. Such panels might also confront the resurgence of practice outside of the academy as well as professional problems such as text books, the job market, and instruction.
Entire sessions, panels, or workshops may be proposed. Single paper proposals should contain suggestions for potential chairs, commentators, or related papers. Proposals should be submitted in triplicate and include a curriculum vita for each participant and a one paragraph abstract that summarizes the thesis and significance of each paper. Proposals should be sent to Konrad Jarausch, Department of History, Hamilton Hall, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC 27514.
The guidelines under which the Program Committee operates are being re viewed and updated, but the committee reminds session proposers of the following points: The committee strongly encourages sessions representing both genders. All participants, except foreign scholars and colleagues from other disciplines, must be bona fide members of the Association. Those who participate in the 1987 program will not be eligible, and multiple appearances by a single person are not permitted. Affiliated societies should keep in mind that their proposals are subject to the same criteria and review as others. The committee has autonomy in the selection of sessions and participants and may alter or combine proposed sessions.
The Program Committee will hold its first meeting in mid-November to dis cuss early submissions. Proposals received before the end of October will receive more favorable consideration than last minute entries. The final deadline for proposals is February 15, 1988.
