The meeting will open on Sunday evening, December 27, with four sessions: “Imagined Pasts: History as Reconstructed”; “Changing Ideologies of Love: Women’s Definitions of Love Throughout Western History”; “Jazz in Society and Politics: Europe, 1918-45”; and “The Ideological Fulfillment of the American Revolution,” and will continue through the afternoon of the 30th.
Since 1987 is the bicentennial of the US Constitution, several sessions are devoted to federalism and constitutional government. All members should have received their printed program by now, which contains the preregistration form for the meeting. The hotel reservation form appeared in the September issue of Perspectives.
Information on discount airfares to the meeting can be obtained from American Airlines by calling their toll free number 1-800/433-1790 and asking for AHA Star File Number S.13564. A list of the fares and cities served appeared in the October Perspectives.
Child Care
A child care center, staffed by competent personnel, will be available during the upcoming AHA annual meeting at the Sheraton Washington. The center will be open for children (through the fifth grade) of registrants at the meeting, at a charge of $5 per hour. To preregister, write Eileen Boris, History Department, Howard University, 2441 6th St. NW, Washington, DC 20059, 202/636-6815, ext. 7035, no later than December 4.
Job Register
In accordance with AHA policy supporting open listing of employment opportunities, the placement operation in Washington will be made as open as possible. The Job Register will be available for use by any person registered for the annual meeting.
The Job Register will be located in Exhibit Hall B at the Sheraton Washington Hotel, 2660 Woodley Rd. NW. It will be open during the following hours only: Sunday, December 27, 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.; Monday, December 28, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Tuesday, December 29, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Wednesday, December 30, 9 a.m. to 12 noon. Opening and closing times are strictly adhered to.
Notices of openings are posted on bulletin boards according to fields of specialization and according to whether the departments listing the positions are or are not interviewing at the Job Register. Some departments posting announcements will not interview but instead will list names and addresses to which candidates may write, similar to announcements currently appearing in the employment section of Perspectives.
Some employers wish to interview outside the Job Register facility. However, the Association encourages all interviewing institutions to use the Job Register facility for all interviews. In those cases when the Job Register facility is not used, it is the responsibility of the candidate and the interviewer to make their own arrangements for where and when to meet. The Job Register staff’s responsibilities are limited to the Exhibit Hall B area only. If an interviewer or interviewee cannot make an interview that was arranged independently of the Job Register, he or she should leave a message at the Message Center in the AHA registration area and/or the AHA Staff Office as soon as possible. Should an emergency phone call be necessary, the Sheraton Washington Hotel’s phone number is 202/328-2000; ask to be connected with the AHA Staff Office.
Finally, many departments will conduct interviews at tables reserved for their use in a special Job Register interviewing section of the exhibit hall. Candidates who find positions posted on the bulletin boards that list Job Register table numbers (such as A-12) as the sites of interviews will be able to schedule time on a first-come, first-served basis until all interview times have been filled. There will be four appointment sign-up tables—A, B, C, and D—and candidates may sign up for only three interviews at a time at each sign-up table.
Many positions have been advertised in the employment section of this publication. After advertising their positions, many interviewing institutions have identified those candidates in whom they are interested and prearranged interviews with them at the annual meeting. Therefore, open interviewing at the Job Register is on a limited scale and does not include all positions; not everyone will be able to obtain an interview. Even though it is sometimes possible to arrange appointments at the Job Register (as already discussed), it is difficult. Candidates who plan to attend the meeting without prearranged interviews should be forewarned. Those who plan to use the Job Register are urged to bring a sufficient supply of vitae and writing implements to the meeting.
Potential interviewing institutions will be receiving Job Register information and forms to fill out and return to the AHA before the annual meeting. If your institution has not received these forms by the third week of November and you wish to make use of the Job Register, notify AHA headquarters immediately.
