The AHA has received $5,000 from the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching for three projects that encourage the scholarship of teaching and learning. The AHA had requested funding for its web site on Teaching and Learning in a Digital Age, for mounting a teaching portfolio on the AHA web site, and for travel funds for three Carnegie Academy for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (CASTL) Fellows to participate in a session entitled "Beyond Coverage in the U.S. History Survey: Reports from the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning" at the Organization of American Historians meeting this spring.

Mills Kelly's course portfolio shares the results of his research into the influence on hypermedia learning resources on student learning in history courses at Texas Tech University and how students learn in a Western civilization course that does not rely on the coverage model. Using the links embedded in the portfolio, readers can either follow the unfolding of the course over the semester in a linear fashion or can explore specific research questions according to their interests. Those viewing the site will also be able to access the raw data from Kelly's student evaluations, as well as samples of student work and reports of outside evaluators who reviewed these work samples. The portfolio contains the following major sections: Introduction, Course Design, Narrative of Course, and Student Learning and Reflections.

The funds will be used to build upon and enhance the results of the first grant AHA received from the Carnegie Foundation. Through its interaction with Carnegie Foundation staff and the history CASTL Fellows, the AHA has developed a more sophisticated approach to the scholarship of teaching and learning. In the three projects for which the AHA received funding, the Association hopes to make teaching more public. The AHA also plans to showcase the work of the CASTL Fellows in the future.
