The meeting will be held December 27-30 at the Hyatt Regency in Chicago. The hotel reservation card was contained in the October issue of Perspectives, and the preregistration form was included in the Program. Information on discount air fares can be obtained by telephoning American Airlines on their toll free number 1-800-433-1790 and asking for AHA Star file number S.11766 (a list of the cities served and the fares appeared in the October Perspectives, p. 4). The reservation desk is open Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to midnight, CST.
The College Board Advanced Placement History Program will again host a reception for current and former AP American history and AP European his tory committee members, readers, and their guests. It will be held on Sunday, December 28, 5:30-7:30 p.m. in Grand Ballroom C in the East Tower of the Hyatt Regency.
On the evening of December 28, the Chicago Medieval Players are giving a performance of St. Nicholas rescuing Adeodatus from his abductors in a Miracle Play that has fascinated audiences since the twelfth century. The producer/directors and many of the performers are Medieval and/or Renaissance scholars. The performance will be held at the Fourth Presbyterian Church, a short walk from the Hyatt Regency. Tickets ($15; students and seniors $7.50; MC, VISA, AMEX accepted) may be obtained by writing to The Chicago Medieval Players, International House, University of Chicago, 1414 E. 59th St., Chicago, IL 60637.
Job Register
In accordance with AHA policy supporting open listing of employment opportunities, the placement operation in Chicago will be made as open as possible. The Job Register will be available for use by any person registered for the meeting.
The Job Register will be located in the West Tower, Regency Ballrooms C and D of the AHA headquarters hotel, the Hyatt Regency, 151 East Wacker Drive. It will be open during the following hours only: Saturday, December 27, 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.; Sunday, December 28, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Monday, December 29, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Tuesday, December 30, 9 a.m. to 12 noon. Opening and closing times are strictly adhered to. Notices of openings are posted on bulletin boards according to fields of specialization and according to whether the departments listing the positions are or are not interviewing at the Job Register. Some departments posting announcements wilt not interview but instead will list names and addresses to which candidates may write, similar to announcements currently appearing in the employment section of Perspectives.
Some employers wish to interview outside the Job Register facility. However, the Association encourages all interviewing institutions to use the Job Register facility for all interviews. In those cases when the Job Register facility is not used, it is the responsibility of the candidate and the interviewer to make their own arrangements for where and when to meet. The Job Register staffs responsibilities are limited to the Regency Ballrooms C and D areas only. If an interviewer or interviewee cannot make an interview that was arranged independently of the Job Register, he or she should leave a message at the Message Center in the AHA registration area and/or the AHA Staff Office as soon as possible. Should an emergency phone call be necessary, the Hyatt Regency number is 312/565-1234; ask to be connected with the AHA Staff Office.
Finally, many departments will conduct interviews at tables reserved for their use in a special Job Register interviewing section of the two ballrooms. Candidates who find positions posted on the bulletin boards that list Job Register table numbers (such as A-11) as the sites of interviews will be able to schedule them on a first-come, first-served basis until all interview times have been filled. There will be three appointment sign-up tables—A, B, and C—and candidates may sign up for only three interviews at a time at each table.
Many positions have been advertised in the employment section of this publication. After advertising their positions, many interviewing institutions have identified those candidates in whom they are interested and prearranged interviews with them at the Annual Meeting. Therefore, open interviewing at the Job Register is on a limited scale and does not include such positions; not everyone will be able to obtain an interview. Even though it is sometimes possible to arrange appointments at the Job Register (as already discussed), it is difficult. Candidates who plan to attend the meeting without prearranged interviews should be forewarned. Those who plan to use theJob Register are urged to bring a sufficient supply of vitae to the meeting.
Potential interviewing institutions will be receiving Job Register information and forms to fill out and return to the AHA before the Annual Meeting. If your institution has not received these forms by the third week of November and you wish to make use of the Job Register, notify the AHA immediately.
A Rose for the AHA
Since 1976, the AHA has provided child care at the Annual Meeting. The AHA is to be commended for continuing this valuable service, particularly since it is a very costly operation, and the AHA is under pressure to cut its budget on all fronts. Many organizations are no longer offering child care at their meetings. The Committee on Women Historians encourages historians registering for the Annual Meeting to make use of the AHA child care center. Historians interested in utilizing this service can be preregistered by contacting the Local Arrangements Committee Chair, Professor Albert Erlebacher, Department of History, 804 West Belden Ave., DePaul University, Chicago, IL 60614.
Public Historians
The National Council on Public History will be sponsoring a luncheon at the AHA meeting this year to provide an opportunity for public historians attending the convention to meet and exchange ideas. This will follow the format of our successful luncheon at the OAH last April and will be, we hope, the “first annual” luncheon at the AHA. It will replace our traditional reception at the convention.
Any public historians, whether members of NCPH or not, wishing to attend the luncheon on December 29 from 12:30 to 2:00 at the Hyatt Regency may purchase tickets in advance by sending a check for $19.50, including tax and tip, to Barb Howe, Executive Secretary, NCPH, Department of History, West Virginia University, Morgantown, WV 26506. Checks should be made payable to the National Council on Public History.
Because this is an experiment for the NCPH at the AHA convention, we would appreciate receiving luncheon reservations by December 15. Please enclose an address to which your ticket should be sent when making your reservation. A limited number of tickets may be on sale at the AHA registration counters, but we strongly encourage everyone to make reservations in advance. Anyone wishing further information about NCPH may contact Howe at the address above or phone her at 304/293-2421.
