On the Cover
In the modern vernacular, a “hot take” is an opinion likely to cause controversy, usually because it is unpopular. Deployed ironically, the phrase suggests that an opinion is simplistic, moralizing, or otherwise banal. But sometimes a take might be, quite literally, very spicy! The peri-peri or bird’s eye chili depicted here is both spicy and a microcosm of colonial history, as Trishula Patel discusses in this issue. And if her article whets your appetite, in Perspectives Daily we had an entire summer series on food and foodways made to order!
