Remembering Tiananmen Square

Matthew P. Romaniello | Mar 30, 2021

Remembering Tiananmen Square is a short teaching module that includes historical context for an annotated primary source, discussion questions, and reflections on student responses and engagement. The author examines how and why stamps issued by the new Solidarity government in Poland commemorated the 1989 student protests in Tiananmen Square and how such everyday objects provide a powerful tool to rediscovering life in Communist societies.
