Africa Enslaved: A Curriculum Unit on Comparative Slave Systems for grades 9-12 offers students and teachers four case studies to explore the history of enslavement around the world. Units range geographically from Latin America (Brazil and Haiti), to Africa (the Swahili Coast), to the Middle East (Ottoman Egypt). Each unit includes an introductory reading, a map, and primary sources with Document-Based-Questions (DBQs) that cover the following topics: legal status of slaves, enslaved labor, rights and responsibilities of enslaved people and enslavers, enslaved people and religion, rebellions, emancipation, and abolition movements.
