The AHA is pleased to announce its 2019–20 fellows for the J. Franklin Jameson Fellowship in American History and the Fellowship in Aerospace History.

David Andrew Johnson

Sponsored jointly by the Library of Congress and the American Historical Association, the J. Franklin Jameson Fellowship in American History is offered each year to support significant scholarly research in the collections of the Library of Congress by scholars at an early stage in their careers in history. The Jameson Fellowship review committee has selected David Andrew Johnson, who received his PhD in history from Rice University in May 2018, as the recipient of the 2019–20 fellowship for his project, “Descent into the Lowcountry: Enslaved Native Americans and the Making of South Carolina, 1659–1750.” Johnson’s project is an expansion of his doctoral dissertation into a monograph that explores the roles of Native Americans in the plantation societies of colonial America.

Stephen Buono

The 2019–20 Fellowship in Aerospace History has been awarded to Stephen Buono, PhD candidate in the Department of History at Indiana University, for his project “The Province of All Mankind: Outer Space and the Promise of Peace, 1957–1970.” Buono plans to use the funds to complete his dissertation, a political, intellectual, and cultural history of US space diplomacy during the Cold War.

Awarded annually, the Fellowship in Aerospace History—supported by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and administered by the AHA—funds projects that undertake advanced research in all aspects of aerospace history, from the earliest human interest in flight to the present, including cultural and intellectual history, economic history, the history of law and public policy, and the history of science, engineering, and management.
