The American Historical Association is looking for a historian to join the publications team as associate editor of Perspectives on History, the AHA’s monthly newsmagazine. The associate editor serves in a variety of writing and editorial capacities at the Association’s headquarters office, working primarily on content for the newsmagazine, but also social media and press relations work as well as assisting with other print and online publications as time allows. The associate editor will participate in a team effort to revise, plan, and develop an integrated suite of print and digital publications. Depending on skills and experience, candidates could also develop and manage a web-based site on history teaching, or assist with the Association’s media and public relations program. For additional details about the position, see the full position description.
A PhD in history (preferably, though not necessarily, in a field other than United States) is ideal, but we will also accept applications from ABDs with four years of relevant experience. Strong writing skills, some experience with editing and proofreading, working knowledge of digital technologies, and familiarity with social media required. Salary comparable to entry-level university faculty position. Benefits package includes competitive medical and life insurance and a qualified pension plan. Review of applications will begin September 15, 2012. The selected applicant will be expected to start working at the AHA office in Washington, D.C., in early January 2013, but with some flexibility as to the start date. To apply, send a cover letter, c.v., and a brief writing sample (or a link to online material) as one document, preferably in PDF format, to Applications@historians.org.
