Jobs and Careers on AHA Today

Elisabeth Grant | Oct 5, 2011

Just last week we celebrated AHA Today’s 5th birthday, and while we were looking back at all the posts over the years we rounded up a few from one of our most popular topics: jobs. Below, take a look back with us through articles on job ads, interviews with historians in a range of non-academic jobs, and a few of Robert Townsend’s reports on what a history major is worth.

Job Ads
Check out these posts on where to find history job listings.

  • Free Access to Online Job Ads
Earlier this month, the AHA opened up access to the history job advertisements posted on its website to everyone. Until recently these ads were only available to members. Now nonmembers also can access the ads too, after a simple registration process.
  • History Jobs Outside of Academia
Looking for a job at a museum, historical society, archives, historical consulting firm, or in the government? Check out our list of where to look.

Jobs and Careers
What better way to learn about what sorts of history jobs are available than by talking to individuals in the field?

  • Jobs and Careers in History
Through this interview series we met an assortment of historians working at the National Air and Space Museum, National Trust for Historic Preservation, American Red Cross, National Park Service, and elsewhere.

Salaries
The AHA’s Deputy Director Robert B. Townsend keeps close tabs on the state of the job market in history. He often reports on AHA Today about salaries, numbers of jobs available, and how history measures up to other majors’ job markets.
