The 1999 annual meeting of the Association will be held January 7-10 in Washington, D.C. Members who want to participate in the program of the 1999 meeting must submit their proposals for panels by February 13, 1998.

The Program Committee calls for proposals by all members of the Association (academic and nonacademic), by scholars in related disciplines, and by affiliated societies. Proposals for panels in all fields of history are solicited in order to provide a balanced program which addresses the entire community of historians and provides opportunities to examine the larger concerns of the profession.

The AHA annual meeting offers a unique opportunity to take stock of the profession by generating conversations across the boundaries of subfields, institutional locations, and disciplines. In addition to welcoming panels in all areas of historical study, the Program Committee encourages proposals on topics related to "Migrations and Diasporas in History." Such proposals could involve either analysis of specific cases and periods or a broader discussion of effective conceptualizations and methodologies.

Jimenez (Univ. of Pittsburgh), David R. Kobrin (Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School, Rockville, Md.), Claire Moses (Univ. of Maryland at College Park), Martha G. Newman (Univ. of Texas at Austin), and Jacqueline A. Rouse (Georgia State Univ.).

The deadline for submission of proposals is February 13, 1998, and only complete proposals for panels will be considered at that time. Complete proposals must contain all elements listed in the checklist and cover sheet printed in the September 1997 Perspectives (p. 16). All persons appearing on the program must be members of the AHA, the exception being foreign scholars and scholars from other disciplines. Only in exceptional circumstances will individuals be allowed to appear consecutively in the 1998 and 1999 programs.
