The Education of Historians for the Twenty-first Century, a report of the AHA Committee on Graduate Education, funded by the Carnegie Corporation, recommended workshops for directors of graduate studies.

The American Historical Association first sponsored such a workshop for department chairs and directors of graduate studies at the 2005 annual meeting in Seattle, and is now sponsoring another workshop.

Directors of graduate education and others interested in graduate education are invited to participate in this summer workshop, which will provide important information about, and facilitate discussion of, a range of issues critical to the work of the directors of graduate education and others involved in graduate education.

The workshop will be held at the Holiday Inn Rosslyn at Key Bridge in Rosslyn, Virginia, just across the Potomac from Georgetown in Washington, D.C. The hotel is three miles away from the Ronald Reagan National Airport and one block from the Rosslyn Metro Station. The Kennedy Center, Smithsonian Museums as well as Arlington Cemetery are a short distance away. Free parking is available at the Hotel.

• The program will begin on Thursday, August 4, 2005, with a reception that will be held from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., and dinner (with a speaker) from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Friday, August 5, 2005

• First Session: 8:30–10:00 Models for Best Practices in Graduate Education.

  Speakers will include representatives from a Preparing Future Faculty program and from the Carnegie Initiative on the Doctorate (CID)

• Second Session: 10:30–12:00 Training for Research and Teaching in a Global Context.

  Speakers will include representatives from graduate programs that are addressing globalization.

• Third Session: 1:00–2:30 Tools for Planning and Assessment in Graduate Programs.

  Speakers will include Robert Townsend of the AHA, and representatives from government agencies and private organizations that are involved in developing data sources critical to graduate education planning.

• Fourth Session: 3:00–4:30 Negotiating Institutional Review Boards.

  Speakers will include government and professional associations representatives involved with developing standards and regulations for IRBs.

Registration and Accommodation

• The registration fee of $200 will include a reception, full breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and two coffee breaks. Registration fee is due July 1, 2005.
