Join ASALH in a conversation in celebration of Juneteenth featuring ASALH’s president Evelyn Brooks Higginbotham and the Pulitzer prize-winning historian Annette Gordon-Reed, who has recently published the book On Juneteenth (2021). Both are National Humanities Medalists and teach in the Department of History at Harvard University.
Gordon-Reed’s book highlights a moving account of her Texas family’s generations-long commemoration of Juneteenth. Annette Gordon-Reed reflects upon its meaning for her ancestors who were enslaved in this state. Gordon-Reed speaks of its symbolic power and importance in her own life and in our nation’s past and present.
