The Institute for Religion, Culture and Public Life at Columbia University is organizing a conference entitled “Populist Power, Faith, and Precarity in Europe,” which will take place May 24 and 25, 2019 in Paris, France.
The conference will consider various forms of popular power in Europe by examining how populism is defined in various contexts, the role of historical movements in the present-day construction of populist narratives and rhetoric(s), how the use of religious identity shapes these movements, and how a movement engages with different media platforms. Contributors are invited to submit abstracts for the following thematic panels:
1) Conceptualizing Popular Politics in Europe
2) The Past in the Present: Populism in Historical Perspective
3) Amplifying Religion and Identity in Political Discourse
4) Media(ted) Populism
5) Inequality and Financial Crises: The Role of Economics and Globalization
