Call for Submissions | Anthropology Day Unessay Competition (Grades 6–12)

Anthropology Day, the American Anthropological Association's annual celebration of what anthropology is and what it can achieve, is coming up on February 16, 2023. One signature AnthroDay event is our Unessay Competition for grades 6-12 in which we invite participants to create something that responds to a given prompt and explores some aspect of human life, in the format of their choosing. Examples of unessay submissions include but are not limited to a comic strip, playlist, podcast interview, script for a play, a game, a film clip, a series of photographs, visual artwork, or a magazine-style article.

This year’s theme is Transitions, which is also the theme of our 2023 Annual Meeting. Unessay creators should reflect on what transitions mean to them, and could include transitions between historical time periods or between generations of a family, transitions between life stages such as the beginning of high school, or learning to navigate a post-pandemic world.

Submissions must be submitted electronically by February 17, 2023. Winners will receive a $50 gift card to Bookshop.org, and selected pieces will be published in the online edition of Anthropology News, AAA’s award–winning member magazine.
