The Hilltop Short-Term FellowshipsThe Hilltop Fellowships support individuals who have a specific need for the Special Collections at Georgetown University’s Lauinger Library to advance a significant scholarly project on Catholicism in disciplines associated with Catholic Studies, broadly conceived.

 

PhD candidates and scholars with terminal degrees who live and work outside of the Washington metropolitan area are eligible to apply. The fellowships are available for one month with a stipend of $3,000. 

 

The library’s collections are especially suitable for studies of Catholicism in the U.S. colonial and early national periods, as well as of Jesuit activity from the colonial period to the present in North America. Projects that focus on American Indian, African American, and women's histories are especially welcome.

Major components of the university’s Special Collections (the first two of which constitute the heart of the Jesuit/Georgetown “slavery archives”) include:

*Georgetown University Archives (eighteenth century to the present)

*Maryland Province (Jesuit) Archives (seventeenth century to the present)

*Woodstock (Jesuit) Theological Library Collection

 

 Among the other collections: 

  • *America magazine archives (1903-1995)
  • *John Gilmary Shea library and papers

And there are numerous collected papers, including those of 

  • *Jesuits from John Carroll to John LaFarge, from John Courtney Murray and Gustave Weigel to Edmund Walsh and Horace McKenna
  • *Leading figures in 20th-century Catholic scholarship and  public life including, journalist and photographer Anna Brady, theologian Monika K. Hellwig, novelist Sr. Alma Regina, and navigator Michael Richey. 
  • *Literary figures, including the Kilmer Family, Seumas MacManus, Theodore Maynard, Sister Miriam RSM, Evelyn Waugh, Graham Greene, Christopher Sykes, Catherine Walston, et al.
