  • The Institute for Advanced Study is a community of scholars focused on intellectual inquiry, free from typical university obligations.  Scholars of any nationality may apply for membership in the School of Historical Studies at the Institute (located in Princeton NJ) for a term or a full academic year.  Resources provided to scholars selected for membership in the School include stipends, offices, libraries, restaurant and housing facilities. 

  • Open to all fields of history, the School of Historical Studies’ principal interests are the history of western, near eastern and Asian civilizations, with particular emphasis upon Greek and Roman civilization, the history of Europe (medieval, early modern, modern), the Islamic world, East Asian studies, art history, the history of science, and late modern history with emphasis on the history of international relations.   Residence in Princeton is required.  Members’ only other obligation is to pursue their own research.  Eligibility requirements include a Ph.D. and a substantial list of publications.
