Virginia Humanities offers fellowships to scholars and writers at the writing or production stage of a research project. We seek applications that are intellectually stimulating, imaginative, and accessible to the public. Applications are invited from across the broad spectrum of public humanities, with an emphasis on Virginia stories.

Residential Fellowships

The maximum fellowship stipend is $15,000 per semester. Fellowships are awarded for one semester or a full academic year. If you are selected to be a Fellow, you will have a private, sunny office a few miles from the University of Virginia. Virginia Humanities shares a scenic property with the Boar’s Head Inn. The property offers spacious lawns, shady spots, ample parking, and two ponds with resident ducks and geese. We have also recently developed a partnership with the Library of Virginia in Richmond that allows two fellows each year to work in Richmond, in close conjunction with the archivists and collections of the Library.

Non-Residential Fellowships

Our non-residential Fellows are typically former fellows who are completing scholarly research and writing projects.  Their affiliation with Virginia Humanities may extend beyond their residential appointment or an association may be formed years after a Fellow’s first appointment as a Virginia Humanities Fellow. Our non-residential fellows are appointed to a discrete term while they complete their projects. They are invited to participate in all Virginia Humanities Fellowship programs and events.
