Native Knowledge 360° Summer Educator Institute
2017 Topic: American Indian Removal

Monday, 7/10 through Friday, 7/14
Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian - Washington, D.C.

Applications are now open for middle and high school educators including classroom teachers, librarians, curriculum/content coordinators, and administrators from Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, and Tennessee.

This in-depth experience provides foundational information about American Indians and supports use of a new online interactive lesson, "American Indian Removal: What Does it Mean to Remove a People?" The sessions focus on the impact of the removal of Native Nations before, during, and after the passage of the Indian Removal Act of 1830. Participants will be chosen from the region of the United States most impacted by removal: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, and Tennessee.

Selected educators will join scholars, education experts, and Native community members for a unique and immersive professional development experience. Participants will take part in schoolarly lectures and discussions, tour the museum's collections and work with staff, Native scholars, and education experts throughout the week.

There is no cost to participate.
Applications deadline: Friday, 4/14.
