To honor the nation's first African-Americans admitted to the U.S. Marine Corps, the first phase of the National Montford Point Marine Memorial will be dedicated on Friday, July 29th at 9:00am in Jacksonville, NC at Lejeune Memorial Gardens. Work on the memorial, which is being constructed in 2 phases, began 7 years ago. Located near the Beirut and Vietnam memorials on Montford Landing Road and NC 24, the first phase of the memorial features a 900 pound bronze statue of a Montford Point Marine picking up/holding an M1 rifle and putting down a can of ammunition. African-American Marines were traditionally relegated to non-combat roles such as supplying ammunition to the front lines. The statue of the Marine holding the rifle symbolizes Montford Pointers earning the right to fight. All are welcome to attend the ceremony.
