The California Rare Book School is pleased to announce an exciting schedule of upcoming summer courses on a variety of topics related to the history of the book. Courses include:

August 1-5

  • Special Collections Librarianship
  • The History of the Book: The Nineteenth & Twentieth Centuries
  • Exhibiting Rare Books & Ephemera
  • History, Identification, & Preservation of Motion Picture Materials

August 8-12

  • Introduction to Archives for Historians & Librarians
  • Donors & Librarians
  • Better Teaching with Rare Materials (NEW)
  • History of the African American Book (NEW)
  • History of Typography

August 15-19

  • Rare Book Cataloging
  • History of the Book in the West
  • History of the Book in East Asia
  • The Book as a Work of Art: The Contemporary Book in Its Historical Context (NEW)
  • Scholars' Studio: A Maker Space for Scholars of the Book (NEW)

A limited number of scholarship awards are available to librarians, archivists, scholars, booksellers, collectors, graduate students, and others. All course applicants are eligible to apply. A scholarship award provides a tuition waiver for one CalRBS course. 

In addition, the Samuel H. Kress Foundation-Dr. Franklin D. Murphy Scholarship is available for art librarians, art historians, and students studying to enter these professions. This scholarship may be used for any course offered by CalRBS. The scholarship provides a tuition waiver for one course. 

The deadline for scholarship applications is June 10.
