Intern for the American Historical Association

The American Historical Association is seeking interns for Fall 2018 (Spring 2019 is not available). We encourage undergraduates, as well as students starting graduate programs, to apply for one of these unpaid positions. Interns may work part time or full time on a flexible schedule. We are happy to work with you to receive course credit for your internship work.

The position descriptions below highlight the potential primary projects that can be undertaken by the interns. Additional tasks will supplement each interns' work that could include research, clerical work, and administrative assistance. All interns have the opportunity to write an article that could be considered for online publication.

Archival Processing

Learn the fundamentals of archival processing as you assist with the AHA’s critical and ongoing project to manage our large collection of paper materials. The intern will work alongside the AHA’s Archives and Office Assistant to identify and categorize materials related to AHA governance, understand and apply the AHA’s document retention policy, process materials, and create box lists and finding aids.

Data on Careers for Historians

Working with the AHA's academic affairs team, the intern will collect and use data on careers for history majors and PhD historians to develop resources for students and faculty. This will include working with our recent survey of history BA recipients to improve our webpage content and collect relevant data that can be shared with history departments.  The intern on this project will also work on our popular "Career Contacts" program to update individual records and recruit new contacts. In addition to data collection and dissemination, the intern will have the opportunity, should she or he desire to do so, to learn to create data visualizations using Tableau.

History in the Media

History is the frequent subject of mainstream news articles and historians are often quoted to share their perspective on current events. But how precisely are journalists invoking history and citing professional historians? The intern working on this project will evaluate the nature of history and historians in contemporary media and deliver a report outlining strategies for improving the AHA’s impact on contemporary conversations.

Working with the AHA’s publications department, the intern will take responsibility for a story from idea to publication. The writing assignment, determined in consultation with the editorial staff, will require research and possible interviews, and will provide an opportunity to explore topics of importance to historians. The intern will also assist the editorial staff by fact-checking print and online content, researching images and writing captions, writing effective headlines, and crafting social media campaigns. The publications intern will also assist with digitizing and converting data. Wikipedia Editing

Help the AHA expand the audience for our extensive video collection by editing appropriate Wikipedia entries to incorporate links to relevant AHA videos. The intern will work with the AHA's Marketing and Public Relations Manager to identify entries that can benefit from an AHA video, become proficient in Wikipedia editing practice, and draft entry changes that effectively incorporate AHA video assets.
