AHA Prize in European International History
The American Historical Association offers the AHA Prize in European International History in recognition of outstanding historical writing in European international history since 1895. This prize was established in accordance with the terms of a bequest by George Louis Beer (1872–1920), historian of the British colonial system before 1765, to be awarded annually for the best work on any phase of European international history since the year 1895 that is submitted by a scholar who is a United States citizen or permanent resident. The prize name was changed in 2024.
The phrase “European international history since the year 1895” may be understood to mean any study of international history since the year 1895 with a significant European dimension. The current prize amount is $1,000. See the list of past recipients.
The general rules for submission are:
- Only books of a high scholarly historical nature should be submitted. Research accuracy, originality, and literary merit are important factors.
- Only books bearing a copyright of 2023 are eligible for the 2024 prize.
- The author must be a United States citizen or permanent resident.
- Nomination submissions may be made by an author or by a publisher. Publishers may submit as many entries as they wish. Authors or publishers may submit the same book for multiple AHA prizes.
- Nominators must complete an online prize submission form for each book submitted.
- One copy of each entry must be sent to each committee member and clearly labeled “AHA Prize in European International History Entry.” Print copies preferred unless otherwise indicated. If only e-copy is available, please contact review committee members beforehand to arrange submission format.
Please Note: Entries must be received by May 15, 2024, to be eligible for the 2024 competition. Entries will not be returned. Recipients will be announced on the AHA website in October 2024 and recognized during a ceremony at the January 2025 AHA annual meeting in New York.

Black France, White Europe: Youth, Race, and Belonging in the Postwar Era (Cornell Univ. Press)
Emily Marker’s highly original and field-changing work on education and youth programs in post–World War II France and Africa brings together two histories that have long been treated as separate: the origins of postwar European integration and decolonization. Her analysis of French attitudes and policies toward Black and white youth demonstrates how efforts to develop an inclusive model of European belonging gave way to a narrower, racialized vision that continues to define what it means to be European.
