Why and in what status did Europeans emigrate to Virginia, New England, and Pennsylvania?
The people that came to Virginia in 1607 were part of commercial enterprise. The colonists that went to Jamestown were supposed to make money for a group of people that invested in a joint-stock company. The people would invest money with out fear of losing it. They assumed that they would get their principle back with interest in just a few years. In 1606 the first charter was signed by James I, which allowed for the formation of the London Company. The company was headed by Sir Thomas Smith, a wealthy merchant, who sought to make a large profit off of colonization in the New World. The settlers that came to New England came for a different reason. Most came to create a utopian-like society based on their religious convictions. During the social and political upheaval that happened as a result of the English Civil War, many new religious groups were formed. Many of the groups were formed out of the desire to reform the Anglican Church. The Puritans, one of these groups, came to America in families to set up a new society that let them live their relatively simple lives in peace. New England became a safe heaven for English Puritans. In Pennsylvania, Quakers came from Europe, like the Puritans, in search of a place that they could have religious freedom. The Quaker religion was unique in that it had no trained ministry. They believed that anyone's interpretation of the Bible was as valid as another's. They came here not for quick wealth but for social reasons
