What would it mean to say that Europeans “encountered” rather than “conquered” the land and the peoples of North America?
The English and French took the initiative to befriend the Indians. Unlike the Spanish conquistadors they did not take and plunder instead they made trades with the Indians. The English were looking to expand in the New World. With the defeat of the Spanish Armada their interests in the New World was soon revived in expanding England into to New World. With many failed attempts though the English did not give up hope due to the writings of a man named Richard Hakluyt. The French who were in search of the Northwest Passage were also big traders with the Indians. Originally looking for a way to China through the northern part of the New World they stumbled upon success trading with the Indians. Their success in trading with the Indians, in particular fur trading, resulted in economic growth for the French. The French had the worst part of North America which was cold and unwelcoming due to the harsh weather. The French settlers in The New World would receive very little to no financial backing form Paris. French migration to the New World was very small and the growth grew really slow. The English and French unlike the Spanish were not as barbaric to the Indians.
