| End of
Semester Evaluation, Spring 2000 |
||||||||||
| 0002-01 | It was a question over an assignment and it was the weekend. |
Holocaust |
Read about victims' stories. It put faces to the assignment |
The web allows you to access more info. |
Discussion is more interesting. I allowed for sharing of opinions without fear of criticism |
focused classes teach more |
||||
| 0002-02 | I am not comfortable speaking out in class. |
First major writing assignment |
Yes, it gave me more facts to use in my paper. |
The web is more convenient, and east to use. You don't have to keep up with a lot of papers. |
I feel that I learn more from a lecture than a discussion |
I feel that focusing on certain areas helped me to learn more. |
I think that this course was very well taught and that I learned a lot of information while attending class. |
|||
| 0002-03 | didn't need to |
I forgot |
The web provides easier access |
In discussion you have to be prepared and you learn a lot more if you are. |
coverage lets the students get a whole picture of historical events that occurred at the time. |
Papers can be more personal so students can write what they thought was important instead of the instructor telling the students what is important. |
The class was great. |
|||
| 0002-04 | I just never had much to say |
Easier, more convenient |
I'm just not much on speaking out in class |
I would rather learn more about more important topics |
||||||
| 0002-05 | I thought that more people would have access to the web |
I think it's easier and it does not require dragging heavy books around |
I liked getting involved and seeing what other people thought. |
I think it is important to know a lot about some things rather than a little about everything. |
||||||
| 0002-06 | Further discussion of what was discussed in class. |
Just about all |
Yes, gave different views than just those assigned. Sometimes changed my views and sometimes didn't. |
Web is available 24/7 and if you lose a document you can go back and get it. Also, not so many papers. You can print what you need and not everything else. |
Discussion gave the change to hear many views and let you form your own view |
The broader topics gave you reasoning and understanding. |
Papers give you the chance to express your views and show you understand. |
|||
| 0002-07 | Not really a people person unless I know more about people |
Because the web requires students to do something or exert some effort. |
Discussion presented different views |
Focused gave certain incidences (sic) of historical significance |
Less studying and availability to get papers reviewed and improved. |
Internet was only helpful if you had internet access which is readily available in library. |
||||
| 0002-08 | I intended to, but did not due to procrastination |
Web provides a channel that's accessible any time |
Discussion encourages individual thought |
Focused, because it provided another perspective. |
Papers..the information and class format calls for analysis and tests do not provide for this. |
|||||
| 0002-09 | I'm a little shy, so it made it easy to express my feelings or opinion just on line |
Web, just because the net is becoming so big and popular, it makes things go much easier |
Discussion, because it really helps everyone get involved and to get a better understanding. |
More focused, because it gives you full understanding of certain topics rather than not know anything about a bunch of material |
Paper, because it really shows that you know what is going on, because you could just guess on a test and still do good. |
I enjoyed this course very much. I hate history, but Mr. Kelly made it very enjoyable and easy to understand. I think you need to teach more subjects at this university, it would make it much easier for all of us to go to class. |
||||
| 0002-10 | It was hard to defend what I thought without physically being there with the person reading it. |
In discussion you hear other points of view and can see ways of looking at a topic that I had never thought of. |
I prefered focused because it allowed one to understand the entire event preceding actual event and the consequences. |
Exams make me nervous and I tend to cram and memorize notes rather than take time to learn the material and use my brain. |
I loved the course. It combined everything that helps me learn into one way this course was designed. It focused on topics and the papers made understanding why the event took place easier. |
|||||
| 0002-11 | I never found any interesting dialogue to comment on |
Almost all of them |
Most of it wasn't very helpful |
Both would be nice. You never know when a computer will crash or a server go down. |
Focused is more interesting |
Writer's block!!! After writing about 12-15 papers for all classes this semester I have started running out of things to say. |
I enjoyed this class and its format. It's nice to have interesting profs. Instead of the stogy (sic) old farts we're used to. |
|||
| 0002-12 | Can be accessed anytime and as many times as one may desire |
When one is asked to discuss something with pears (sic), he/she actually must know the material. |
Quality/knowledge over quantity |
Separate the good students from the bad, not near as judgemental as papers. |
||||||
| 0002-13 | I'm not very talkative, I prefer to sit back and just evaluate what everyone has to say. |
For one thing, it would be more $$ and it is too typical |
I personally get more out of lecture because I know what the teacher is saying will be what we are tested over. |
It is something new compared to other classes and you get a full coverage of the material. |
With papers you can tell what you have learned instead of being asked with a test that m ight not be over what was covered in class. |
|||||
| 0002-14 | I was on-line and wanted someone's opinion on my idea. It helped me reach people that I didn't know for help. |
I'm a poor organizer. I tend to lose papers. It's nice to be able to fall back on the internet for my materials. |
Lecture puts me to sleep. I don't feel involved in the learning experience. |
Why fly through material, forgetting most of what you were supposed to learn, when you can grasp a few subjects really well. |
I think essays and exams are valid methods of testing. |
You are one of the most interesting teachers I've ever had. I enjoyed your enthusiasm and interest in our thoughts. Although I didn't attend class like I should, but that resulted from laziness to get out of bed, not lack of interest in the class. I appreciate the excitement you brought to the classroom. I actually feel smarter after taking this class. |
||||
| 0002-15 | Because someone had a question that I had an answer to |
A lot of them are the ones I was really interested in, can't remember specifically at the moment. |
Possibly |
Web is easier to find in the middle of the night! I hate keeping up with paper also. And getting to choose what I want to read is a huge bonus. |
Discussion rocks; much more personable and informative. Lecture gets boring! |
Focused was awesome, allowed me to see bigger picture by covering a small amount of info. Much better than learning a bunch of facts I will forget. |
This class ruled! I enjoyed coming to class each day! |
|||
| 0002-16 | Just never got around to it due to having other class projects to work on |
Yes, it was influenced because the source that I found I used to help write my paper |
Books are expensive |
I enjoy discussion classes. It allows the student to use their brain |
If you want to learn about as many topics as possible, you should have learned about it in H.S. (I did). |
Essay writing is not one of my strong points, I feel my grade could have been better with an examination |
||||
| 0002-17 | I missed class, so I wanted to participate on-line |
Discussion keeps you interested and awake! |
I prefer a focused topic rather than cramming it all in. I learn better and actually become interested this way. |
Honestly this was the best history course I've ever taken. I actually looked forward to coming. I think the way you taught it made it so much more interesting. For example, I've been taught about the Holocaust for years, but never did I fully comprehend this tragedy until this course. Thanks for making it fun! |
||||||
| 0002-18 | Usually it was because class ended before I got to speak |
I wouldn't have prefered it, because it made you feel like you ewre researching, but it would have been nice to have access to print form in case I couldn't get to a computer. |
In my opinion you learn more, because you get involved |
I prefer focused because it isn't as rushed as one that is trying to cover the whole book. |
I prefer papers because it shows how much you know and understand. Not just how good you studied the night before. |
|||||
| 0002-19 | to receive extra credit |
Print is more accessable (sic). If I'm on campus and just want to quickly read some of the reading, it wasn't always available. |
Discussion allows students to think more and allows more comfort in a classroom |
Focused was different. I'm so used to coverage that it was nice to have a change. |
Often times for exams you memorize and then forget. Papers made you work and think about your own ideas. |
|||||
| 0002-20 | I was able to take part in the class for discussions and therefore didn't have to do the on-line discussion |
Didn't have to |
The web for me was more convenient |
I get more out of a disscussion class |
Changing constantly will not help me learn anything |
I really enjoyed using the internet for this course. I found it very useful and convenient. In addition to the internet, I enjoyed how this class was conducted. The discussions were better than just having a lecture every time. Dr. Kelly was very approachable and willing to help students out which was very nice. I would recommend Dr. Kelly to any student who needed to take a history class. |
||||
| 0002-21 | I did my explaining with the class |
Web is much more convenient |
Lecture is more boring |
you learn it better when "focused" |
||||||
| 0002-22 | Honestly I would forget it was there |
Right vs. Left |
Not really. Just wanted to see what the documents had to say. |
I enjoyed having an actual document that we had to work from. |
Everyone gets involved in discussions and you are able to hear others' opinions. |
When you put all the topics together it is much easier to understand. |
||||
| 0002-23 | I just used it for looking up assignments and other resources |
I was just interested in the subject |
Yes, it gave me the background info I needed |
It seems the web offers more possibilities and more information than a couple of boring textbooks. |
I didn't mind the discussions, but I find it more informative to listen to a lecture and then be able to do discussion. |
Focused gives you a much more in depth look at certain subjects |
I really did enjoy your class. My attendance was poor, but the internet site kept me informed and intuned (sic) to what was going on throughout the course of the semester. |
|||
| 0002-24 | I felt like I contributed enough during class |
The really long documents would have been better in print. Most people just printed them off the web anyway. |
Lecture classes are so boring I feel learned a lot more from discussions |
When you just briefly touch on issues, it is hard to really enjoy it. |
Maybe half and half. Keep the short essays, but maybe give tests for the midterm and final |
The professor made this course interesting. It it wasn't for his enthusiasm and knowledge, the class would have been pretty dull. Thanks for making this a great class! |
||||
| 0002-25 | I'm not the kind to share how I feel about things, especially not to other students. |
For the papers I wrote |
It gave me new facts to expand upon. |
The web is free and easier to do. I think its more interesting on the web. |
Discussion involves the students and allows them to say how they feel about issues. |
History is my favorite subject and I would like to learn as much as possible. |
Papers allow students to get the full grasp of things. It forces you to know the material, not memorize it. |
|||
| 0002-26 | Because of excessive absences or lack of time in class. |
Darwin and DeGouge, French Constitution |
I have never taken the time to listen to the evolutionists and I read it with a closed mind, but changed my views on others' beliefs |
Your discression, all at one place instead of getting lost in the stacks. |
Discussion allows students to test ideas without influencing their grade on papers. |
Focused=understanding. |
Papers->Overall comprehension not select questions that you may not have deemed important. |
I enjoyed this course very much. This class helped my decision to major in history. Thanks. |
||
| 0002-27 | I just don't fill (sic) comftable (sic) talking in front of a lot of people. |
I prefer print because there may be some individuals who do not know how to use the web. |
I would rather have discussion because it isn't as boring. I also think it allows a student to learn more. |
Because your (sic) able to get a better understanding of the focused period. |
||||||
| 0002-28 | I didn't think about it until I got home usually. |
I can access it any time, and I can instant message people while reading. |
Gives a chance for me to reflect--to see if I understand the big picture. |
Get down and see hidden details. Something other than "the history channel" type stuff. |
Papers. You can think about and you don't have to write on the spot. |
It was my favorite class. I didn't mind getting up to go. Made European history interesting when I used to find it boring. |
||||
| 0002-29 | I was not sure if I would do it right, so I brought it up in class. |
Could not remember how. |
Women's rights |
No. I returned to the assignment |
I think both can benefit more than one. |
This was totally different and totally effective. |
"Focused" works great! Keep this system. |
Papers rule--you get the chance to really show what you know without test anxiety. |
Keep using the internet coupled with real sources (paper). "focused" concept worked well!! |
|
