End of Semester
Evaluation, Spring 2000 |
|||||||
0001-1 |
I prefer print. If I were to have to go to the web, I think it would be harder due to the time and not being sure which resources to use. |
Discussion involves the students more. Most teachers put students to sleep. |
Focused helps put things in a better perspective. Coverage runs through things too fast. |
Some people have a hard time putting thoughts to paper. Exams would help us bring up grades and make sure we were keeping up with reading assignments |
Great course, if I could, I would take more classes offered by the professor. I learned more in this class than in my other history class (Modern Middle East). His (Kelly's) teaching style was great. |
||
0001-2 |
I used encyclopedias |
If they were on the web I just would have printed them out myself. |
I thought the discussion put good assignments on the floor. In practice it makes use of every angle of the event. Every side is discussed. |
Focused. Its one thing to know the material, but its more important to learn the material. Long term memory is more useful than short-term memory. |
|||
0001-3 |
The final paper. |
When I read or study something in print, it allows me to interact more with what I'm reading. I can underline, write notes, and look back over what I've read without worrying about the failure of the technology I'm using. |
Discussion not only allows me to voice my opinions and evaluate them, but also allows me to hear other students' opinions. |
||||
0001-4 |
With print they are always available to read and with the web, you may not be able to bring up the document. |
Discussion makes us get involved in what we are learning, and with the lecture, I think we tend to forget what goes on. |
focused allows you to really understand what is happening. |
I prefer papers rather than exams, because with exams I tend to memorize the information, rather than learn and understand the information. |
|||
0001-5 |
I looked up some definitions for our last paper and I wanted to see what other info. I could find. |
I don't always have time to log onto the net, so I like having the copies in front of me. |
Lectures are so boring, there is more interaction in discussion classes. |
focused offers info. On what was really important. |
I feel that more is learned while discussing major points. |
||
0001-6 |
Progression of individuals in society [First paper] |
I like having things I can hold and read. I also highlight a lot. |
Discussion helps me get my thoughts organized |
I learned more on th focused. It was nice to have details. |
I would have liked to have quizes or something b/c we'd get in groups and some people wouldn't study. |
||
0001-7 |
Print is more convenient for those who have no computer. |
Discussion allows everyone to be involved. |
Even though this course was easy, meaning the papers (only) & discussion. The challenge in the class was to think and write like a historian, and that's what motivates people. Enjoyed your class! |
||||
0001-8 |
Because when if I had to look up the information then I would have ahd to print them myself. |
A discussion makes you more involved in the material. In a lecture you can easily drift away from the material and sit there and daydream. |
A more focused class definitely les you learn more about the material. It made a history class a lot less boring. |
The class was very informative and still fun. The material that we covered in class can very easily become boring, but the stories about first-hand accounts, or the fact that you had first-hand experiences in the areas that we talked about made it interesting. |
|||
0001-9 |
Most of them. Hobbes, Rousseau, etc. The internet allowed me to get other information that the handouts didn't contain. |
For my paper on Rousseau |
The web is very helpful, but having the printed documents is a much easier experience for this class. |
Actually a combination of both really makes a class much more enjoyable and understandable |
It is good to have coverage of topics, but also have moments of focused study. |
Papers make it easier for students to express how they view topics. Exams give the student a better opportunity to show how they retained all of the info. |
Very nice course |
0001-10 |
First major paper. Found info about Hobbes, Locke and Rousseau to aid in my understanding of the material |
I prefer print (though the documents we had were off the internet) because it is less complicated, I.e., don't have to hunt for a computer, wait for it to print (the ATLC usually takes 45 minutes to an hour) and I believe that students should not become internet dependent. |
Discussion courses require you to keep up with readings. Also, Kelly's ability to guide the discussions to where he wanted them to go was impressive. |
The material covered were essential themes and events of W. Europe and we were able to comprehend rather than memorize and regurgitate. |
Papers teach me more instead of cramming to understand the material I investigate until I know the circumstances backwards and forwards and actually develop an interpretation of my own. |
Enjoyed it, learned a lot. |
|
0001-11 |
Actually just because my computer is really old and slow, so things on the web take a long time. |
I find lecture more interesting. Questions are answered more immediately and you don't seem to spend 30 min. on one or two points like in a discussion |
Because a student takes history classes every year of their schooling, we know brief overviews already, but in depth coverage is important to learn more. |
I'm not a confident writer. I don't think I am very good. |
|||
0001-12 |
Discussion gets you more involved, you can express your own opinion on a subject that might help another student understand. |
Too much information |
I learn more by studying than research. I feel I can b.s. my way through a paper. |
||||
0001-13 |
I believe the web has more information. [MIS student] |
Discussion courses, the students are more involved and more interested in the class b/c they get a chance to express their own opinions. |
I prefer focused b/c you spend more time on a topic & are more likely to learn and remember it. |
Personally exams are easier than papers, but I became a better historical writer from this course |
|||
0001-14 |
I prefer print because print is easier to make notes on the paper and I don't have to keep scrolling back when I want to re-read something. |
Discussion made the class more interesting because discussion allows a wide range of opinions to be stated and evaluated. |
I prefer focused because the topics made the class much more interesting. A course that is "coverage" is just a professor giving dates and facts, and I don't learn as much in that format. |
Papers allow more research for me which leads to gaining a greater knowledge of a certain subject. |
I really enjoyed the structure of this class. I have learned more in this history class than any I have taken here at Tech. |
||
0001-15 |
I prefer print because its tangible. I can look at the document, highlight key points and go back easily to any part I may want to reread. |
The discussions made you think more critically, especially when you were forced to argue for a particular side of an issue. |
The focused approach led me to make connections between topics and to get a better understanding of some key topics. I like having learned a lot about a little rather than a little about a lot. |
Papers more accurately measure how a student has grasped the material. Any one can memorize names and dates to pass an exam, but writing a paper takes research and comprehension of the material. |
|||
0001-16 |
I prefer print b/c they were very handy. I could bring them anywhere (example: bus, library, or before I go to bed). |
Discussions got everyone involved in the class, plus a lot of the documents we read were very controversial. |
Other classes just pile on information. I end up leaving class and not remembering a thing. |
I prefer paper, but it's hard for me b/c I am not a writer. |
I would recommend this class to other students. |
||
0001-17 |
Karl Marx was researched to get a deeper perspective of his ideals. |
Print is obviously better for us lazy students because you don't have to exert much effort in finding information. |
Discussions are more involving |
Getting in depth on subjects is interesting |
I am not great at writing papers |
||
0001-18 |
I did research for my John Locke paper and I did resesarch for Thomas Malthus paper |
Malthus paper |
More access to web even if you don't own a computer the library is well equiped with access. |
I prefer the process of discussion--it stimulates thought. |
I like the focused part of history-I learned more an retain more than just knowledge of a lot of events or dates. |
Very informative. I learned more about history and human nature. I found that history is a very important part of life. I once fumbled for an answer to why do you study history? Why do you live in the past? I now know that history teaches us the origin of human development. I know that by looking at the past we, as a society can learn to build a better future. I know I sound like the national spokesman for the history channel, but I love history. Thank you Dr. Kelly. |
|
0001-19 |
The web has too much information. It is easier to use print to narrow it down. |
I prefer discussion because I learn better by interacting. |
I really like focused because I get to understand why things happened and relate it to how the people felt at the time. |
I prefer papers rather than exams, because with exams I tend to memorize the information, rather than learn and understand the information. |
|||
0001-20 |
All of them. First to find more background information and to find opinions that would challenge/support my own. |
Last paper, I'm trying to incorporate Hollywood's view of communism |
I prefer the web only so it is more accessible and if I wanted a printout to highlight I could print it myself. |
Lecture was only one perspective whereas discussions open the class to 30 perspectives with a professor's reasoning to clarify subjects. |
"Other" history courses do that. This course let us see the background and roots to the history. |
One I'm better at papers and 2 free thought and creativity is allowed on papers. |
More classes need to focus on free thought and understanding rather than dates and events. Both types of classes are useful. |
0001-21 |
The paper on Darwin |
I like interaction |
I like variety. But if I could learn as much as possible about one interesting topic, It might be more effective on learning |
Appreciate your help |
|||
0001-22 |
Darwin, 1st major paper |
I prefer print because it is esier to read and doesn't hurt your eyes. |
I felt more involved in the class and I feel that a lot of points were brought up by students that may have been overlooked by the teacher. |
I would prefer a class that covered more historical material just because I think it would be neat to learn more about other events. |
I prefered papers because it gave me the opportunity to state my opinion thoroughly. |
It was very informative and was the funnest class I have had so far. |
|
0001-23 |
The paper on Darwin |
Darwin |
Web sources are sometimes very time consuming |
I prefer a course that is a combination of the 2-like towards the end of the semester |
Focused is better because you can appreciate its historical significance |
Very different. Very effective. I sometimes left the class happy, sometimes a little ticked about comments made by students during discussions--it was great! I learned a lot. |
