There were two major crises that were the result of the Mexican War, one being the westward expansion of the United States, and the other being affairs arising dealing with slavery and where it is prohibited. The Constitution always provided the bind for the north and south states, in result the Missouri Compromise line. This line was throughout the United States, and all states south of this line would be slave states and all the states north of this line would be free. It was not until 1840 where the Mexican War took place that decisions that would compromise this agreement would go underway. Under the Constitution it was not stated whether or not these newly acquired territories would be free or not. The Union under Congress had the right to pick and choose free and slave states, and after Texas was declared a slave state, it was a balance for Oregon to be a free state. With talks of the prohibition of slavery, Congress had the power to make these new states, free states since it was not specifically said in the Constitution. Congress granted California and New Mexico to be free states even though they are under the Missouri Compromise line. At the end of the war, there was a strong split between the south and the north and there were continuing arguments, which eventually led way to the Civil War.
