Anonymous One Chapter 12 Question 1 How well did African American cope with being slaves in the America south? Did free slaves suffer as well slaves? Most Africans Americans of the early mid century experienced slavery in the plantation. Their masters ensured their personal safety and he profitability of their enterprise by using all the physical and psychological abuse to make slaves docile and obedient. The master tried to convince the slaves that the whites were superior and had the right to rule the black The African American in the south did not cope well as slaves because they lived under bondage. They were valuable property and the main tools of production for a booming economy, and it was in the interest of the master to see that the slaves remained in good enough condition to work hard and produce large numbers of children who worked in the plantation as well. African American in the south were physically abused and undernourishment. Their master did not have any close and intimate relationship with them. When some master inevitable yielded to the temptation of power of their bad tempers, they tortured, killed or raped slave women. Slaves lacked legal protection against such abuse because their testimony was not accepted in court. The free black suffered as well. The only difference with the free blacks was that they were not in bondages slaves but still were treated as social outcast, and were denied legal and political equality with whites. The free blacks were faced with discrimination and their rights were denied. They had difficulties in finding decent jobs, most employers preferred immigrants or other whites to the blacks. Many states excluded blacks entirely from public schools and federal government banned them from serving in the military. Free blacks were even denied US passports; there fore they were stateless persons. In the south the free blacks were forced to register or have white guardian who were responsible for their behavior. They were relatively work position to work against slavery.
