On May 11, 1846, President James Polk gave an address to the Senate and House of Representatives in regards to the conflict between the United States and Mexico. Polk announced to the Congress all the actions that were taking place in a subsequent and precise order. Polk explained in detail, events leading up to this war and why it was important for the United States to protect their newly acquired territory. He gave his defense towards his actions, how they were willing to adjust their boundaries to satisfy Mexico to cease conflict. After many efforts of peace on behalf of the United States, Mexico felt it was necessary to attack the people in Texas. This attack was a threat to Texas because they joined the United States. Mexico felt it was appropriate to seize back their territory. At the time of this address, Polk requested Congress to get the public involved by calling for men to serve. Polk states this war is the duty of the United States to protect their territory, and this, as seen by Polk, was the only alternative.
