Jackson became president at a very strange time in the history of America. The North agreed with everything that he wanted to do, and the South wanted to secede from the union. The stated were tired of being told how to run their governments, and the south was especially mad about the ending of slavery. The most verbal state would be South Carolina. They have threatened secession from the very get going of Jackson’s presidency. They would try to everything to become as thorn in Jackson’s side. The leaders in South Carolina really wanted to have no part in stopping the revolts and skirmishes that were taking place. Some of the things the state was doing with the help of John Calhoun were to file a Nullification act against the government of the US, saying that they cannot be regulated and taxed for no reason. They threaten to secede because of these reasons. The closed all of the courts down until their demands were met. Jackson felt that the leaders in South Carolina had a total disregard for the central government and that something must be done in order to squash the ideas of secession in the mind of not just the South Carolinians, but of all states that were thinking of secession as a means of over throwing the government. Jackson leadership is one based on the ideas of states’ rights, but with a strong but fair central government. He believed that he was doing what was best for the whole country by imposing the tariffs. But he also believed that the government would crumble if all of the states were not united less than one common idealism. He was taking his idea from the backing of the north, because of the pressure that was being put on him from the industries. Jackson felt that the best thing he could do wad to free the slaves and make everyone equal. This would be the starting point of strife between North and South and would help lead to the Civil War.
