During the time of 1793, England and France were the two most powerful nations of the world. Their impact on the United States brought upon disagreements between the new republic and their economic and foreign policies. Therefore sides were chosen that corresponded with either the policies of England or France. Two parties were formed, the federalists and the republicans. The federalists followed England, where they desired a strong national government, a central economic plan, and to maintain public order by any means necessary. The republicans which is also known as the Jeffersonians, urged for states’ rights, strict interpretation of the Constitution, and watch over the greedy. The republican were close with France. In 1793, France declared war on England, which out a strain on America’s foreign policy. Since most of America’s imports were from England, and they also had treaties with France against England, the United States were not at ease. Arguments arose between Hamilton and Jefferson; this was in fact one of the first major diplomatic crisis. In act the United States proclaimed neutrality on April 22, 1793. The United States tried not to get involved in foreign affairs in order to keep relations steady.
