What kinds of people came to the colony in 1607 and 1608? What were their occupations? What else stands out about them?
The first people that came to the colony in 1607 were men that were trying to settle. There were all different types of men that came. Nearly ever person served a purpose to make a community. In the beginning, there were six council members, a preacher, six carpenters, a blacksmith, a sailor, a barber, two bricklayers, a mason, a tailor, a drum, a bunch of Gentlemen, a few boys, and some laborers. This is all that they needed at first to make a solid foundation. The next January, another shipment of people came over. This time, there was a person to be appointed to council, a fueller, four refiners, a gunner, a perfummer, ten tailors, two apothecaries, a surgeon, a cooper, a tobacco-pipe-maker, a blacksmith, and many gentlemen and many laborers. Since many gentlemen came and laborers, that shows that the laborers came for the opportunity to get work, and the gentlemen came to make more money. In the fall another supply of people came over. This included two more people for council, a few boys, and many tradesmen, laborers and gentlemen. All three groups that came had a vast amount of Gentlemen and a descent amount of laborers too. This shows that they all came because they thought the colony had potential. The Gentlemen obviously came to make more money, and the laborers probably came to make money working for the Gentlemen. Also with each trip, the people who settled probably realized that they need certain people with trades and specialties.
What types of people were in the Majority?
The majority of the people were The Gentlemen followed by the laborers and the tradesmen on the last voyage. This is because the Gentlemen wanted to make money in the colony, and the laborers and tradesmen were needed. The gentlemen most likely hired the laborers, while the tradesmen were their own bosses and made things for the people.
