The Virginia Company was a group of travelers who came to Virginia and established the colony known as Jamestown. Their expectations on this voyage were to find gold and a water route to the Orient. These passengers consisted mainly of "Gentlemen" as recorded by Captain John Smith. Other largely held occupations were artisans, craftsmen, and laborers. Minor positions were councils, preachers, and tradesmen. As noted there were only two women; a mistress and her maid; strangely enough there were no children. I compared these passengers to those who traveled to North America on the Mayflower. The passengers on the Mayflower traveled with their wives and children. I believe that the Mayflower was settled in North America to escape religious persecution in England, which would explain this voyage being more family oriented. Between 1607 and 1608 the colonists of Jamestown were attacked by the Algonquian natives, which had a negative effect on the settlers. Disease and famine also diminished the population. In 1619 Jamestown progressively became prosperous when the chief of the Algonquian natives married a settler. Later the Algonquian natives attacked the settlers again bringing Jamestown back down to nothing.
