What role did diversity play in the Middle Colonies? In New England?
In the Middle Colonies diversity played a very big role in their formation and the governing of the colonies. There were people there from all over there were Germans, French, English, Finns, Swedes and a lot of free blacks who were once slaves. In this you have many different religions, cultures and languages. This in itself is a major problem nobody is ever after the same goal. For example William Penn set up his colony as a religious refuge for the Quakers. The Duke of York set up New York for his own personal gain. There were also Puritans who left Massachusetts and Connecticut for land settlement s on Long Island The fact that all the colonies were not united made it easy for England to get its hands on the New Netherlands settlement. Everyone was determined to remain its own separate entity. Like the Dutch who refused to assimilate to the English culture that surrounded them. William Penn's idea of a place for everyone worked out good it was a attraction to all you could come to Pennsylvania and be yourself unlike in New England where you had become part of the church in some way. Penn was selling land with no strings attached so this was an opportunity for many to venture to the new land and start a different life for themselves. As a result of this people from everywhere came. Bringing in eight thousand immigrants within a four-year period. He had Europeans, Dutch, Germans, Swedes, Danes, Finns, Scotch, Irish and English all in this colony. The fact that there were so many different people there made this place comfortable to live in and a successful colony. So the diversity here made this place desirable.
