Richard Hackluyt of Oxford was the Chaplain to the English ambassador to Paris who recorded and documented voyages of England. Hakluyt wrote the Discourse of Western Planting in 1584, and proposed that England should colonize the New World. Hakluyt felt that England was under a great deal of stress because of the religious conflicts among the people, he believed that to make England more sufficient they should colonize and gain commodities from Africa, Europe, and Asia. This will increase trades upon the nations. The period of our studies begins with the colonization of the Americas by such dominate nations as England and Spain. Hakluyt's proposal showed the reader his reasoning on why and what England would gain by colonization. This information would help understand the reasons why history in the United States began the way it did. This primary source would relate to the course's theme of migration. Once England took upon the colonization of the United States, people who were victimized because of their religion fled to this new country in hopes of establishing a way of life, which was accepted. This also ties into another one of the course's themes that being of freedom. I think Hakluyt was a nationalist of his country and wrote the Discourse of Western Planting for the best interest of the success of England.
