Gayle Fischer

Gayle FischerGayle V. Fischer is an associate professor of history at Salem State University in Salem, Massachusetts. Her teaching focuses on gender history and service courses in world history and historiography. “Finding the Sources: A Historian and A Librarian Unite” and “Theatre Across the Curriculum: In the History Classroom” are two examples of articles she has written about teaching. Off and on for the last five years, she has chaired the SSU History Department Curriculum Committee and been asked by the department chair to develop an assessment plan for the major. Thus, she is immersed in the very issues the Tuning Project is set to address. Pantaloons & Power: A Nineteenth-Century Dress Reform in the United States (Kent State University Press, 2001) reflects Fischer’s interest in clothing in history, as does her current research project which examines nuns who taught in public schools. Fischer received her PhD from Indiana University in Bloomington; her MA in women’s history from Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, New York; and her BA in theatre from the University of Texas at Austin.
